Key Configuration Requirements for LRS Using ArcPro Geoprocessing Tools
Jackie Smith, GIS Consulting and PODS Data Migration Projects
Many oil and gas pipeline operators throughout the industry are making the move to Esri’s ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing (APR) platform. This move provides a comprehensive, modern, and world-class system for managing pipeline data and streamlining operations. With improved data management and loading capabilities, optimized workflows, and increased regulatory compliance, APR offers significant benefits; the overall process of upgrading to APR, however, can be daunting.
Geonamic is one of the leading providers of APR implementation and integration services, and we have recently completed several data migration and APR implementations for several major pipeline operators. Our combination of experience, tools, and expertise fully supports every step of the overall process and puts operators’ minds at ease. A successful APR implementation and configuration requires expertise in the underlying data model, such as UPDM or PODS, configuring the LRS or Location Referencing System, loading or migrating data, and enabling steps to edit with APR.
A key requirement is to configure the LRS or Location Referencing System using ArcGIS Pro Geoprocessing tools. Geonamic’s approach to this task includes these five primary steps:

Next, Geonamic understands that proper data loading and migration is crucial to ensure that the PODS or UPDM data model has the data content and data integrity needed to continue. Loading data can be accomplished manually using Esri Geoprocessing tools such as Append Routes and Append Events. Geonamic also provides full-scale data migrations by using robust data migration scripts and programs involving SQL and/or FME.
The last task that defines a successful APR implementation involves setting up the data management environment for editing APR. This includes enabling editor tracking and Branch Versioning, as well as publishing a map with all APR layers as a feature edit service to the ArcGIS Enterprise portal. With APR, the editors are no longer editing against databases directly, but using a feature edit service.
Our comprehensive approach, team of experts, as well as our thorough instructor-led training, sets Geonamic apart from the rest. Contact us today to learn more about the substantial value and advantages of using Esri APR to extend your organization’s editing to the entire ArcGIS Enterprise.

Register for the Upcoming Geonamic PODScast!

Join us on September 10th!
The PODS 7 model provides an ideal system of record to support pipeline risk modeling including qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative/probabilistic algorithms. This PODScast will review methods for managing key source asset and inspection data in PODS, including use of PODS views to manage pre-processed risk factors, geoprocessing, and publishing of risk model results to PODS. Geonamic will be joined by business partners and industry experts PipelineRisk and GCR Integrity to review risk algorithms based on PODS. The session will also include a review of the application of Machine Learning to risk model inputs and results to help identify threat drivers and mitigation opportunities.
Risk Model Improvement Initiative, Continued Conversations
Geonamic and Pipeline-Risk, both leading technology providers in the oil and gas midstream market, have partnered to sponsor a working group of forward-thinking pipeline operators and risk experts. The goal of the working group is to combine the experience, expertise and data of each participant to explore the practicality of adopting advanced and versatile machine-learned risk models. The project will focus on the efficacy of the models, validation of risk results, risk factor sensitivity, as well as model transparency and interpretability. At the end of the project, pipeline integrity managers and risk engineers will have a clear understanding of machine learning methods and whether machine learning risk assessment is suitable for their Integrity Management and Risk Assessment program.
